Why Our Products are Superior?

All mattresses are not created equal.

"I feel the bar!"

  • This is the largest complaint we hear.
  • One must keep in mind the constraints of a sofa bed mechanism in comparison to a regular bed. Most sofa bed mechanisms can only accept a 4” mattress. This does not allow enough height for a good quality innerspring mattress.
  • Good quality innerspring mattresses start at approximately 8” thick and go up from there.

Why you feel the bar on an inferior mattress?

  • In cheap low density foam and innerspring mattresses, the mattress is "bottoming out."
  • The mattress is fully compressing when weight is applied.

Why our mattresses are superior?

  • Our products are engineered so that you won’t feel the bar.
  • We use high density foams. The higher the density, the higher the quality (ie. support, durability, and the ability to bounce back and maintain its shape.)
  • IFD (formerly ILD) is the compression factor in foam, it determines how hard or how soft the foam will be and how much it will compress. We use higher compression foams, which are firmer  and will not fully compress.
  • Since it will not fully compress, you wont feel the bars from the sofa bed mechanism.

Why so many sizes?

  • Regular mattresses come in standard sizes (Twin, Full, Queen, King, etc.) but sofa bed mattresses do not because there isn't a standardization in design of sofa bed mechanisms.
  • We stock the most common sizes...54"x72"(Full) and 60"x72"(Queen)
  • All other sizes are "special" sizes which we typically ship within one week.

All About Foam

Specifications For Our Deluxe Model:

  • Foam density – 1.8 lbs/cu-ft. (high density)
  • IFD/ILD – 48 (high compression)
  • Foam thickness - 4 or 5 inches

Specifications For Our Elite Model:

  • Foam density – 2.5 lbs/cu-ft. (high density)
  • IFD/ILD – 41 (high compression)
  • Foam thickness - 4 inches

IFD/ILD (Indentation Force Deflection / Indentation Load Deflection) :

  • The Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) or Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) number represents the amount of force required to indent a foam sample by a specified percentage of its original thickness.
  • IFD (formerly ILD) is the term used to describe the firmness or softness of polyurethane foam. Visit http://www.pfa.org/jifsg/jifsgs4.html for more information.

Density:

  • Density is a measure of the weight of material per unit volume (lbs/cu-ft.) It is one of the most important of all form properties. The lower density, the more air spaces there are in the foam.
  • High density foam products generally offer a great deal of support.

How Density and IFD/ILD affect foam performance:

  • High density foams can be made very soft.
  • Low density foams can be made very firm.
  • There is no such thing as a "hard" or "soft" density.
  • There is a difference between firmness and support.

Other Factors:

  • Foam durability, flex fatigue and compression set are other terms related to foam performance. We concern ourselves with all of these factors.
  • There are books written about the physics and chemistry of foam. For more information we refer you to the "Polyurethane Foam Association". Their web address is http://www.pfa.org.

Our Warrantee:

  • Sofa-Bed-Mattress.com warrantees its sleeper sofa bed mattress to be free from manufacturer’s defects for a period of five years from the date of purchase. This warranty does not apply to the mattress cover. All mattresses covered by this warranty must be returned in sanitary condition, (no stains,) and the customer is responsible for all shipping costs.
  • We will replace or repair the mattress during the warrantee period at no additional cost to our customer beyond the freight charges.

Ticking - The Mattress Cover

  • In mattress manufacturing, the cloth covers are referred to as ticking.

  • In sofa bed mattresses, there is a design issue. We would like to use a thick quilted ticking. Unfortunately, when the mattress is folded away inside the sofa, the thick quilted material tends to bunch up in the creases. This bunching causes another problem as well. The mattress tends to shift around so that the seams wind up moving onto the flat sleeping surface.

  • Experience has taught us that a thin-quilted ticking gives the most satisfactory long term service for a sofa bed mattress.

Mattress Care

  • It's a good idea to turn your mattress every few months, or every few years if you rarely use it.

  • Use a mattress protector (pad.) A washable mattress protector will go a long way towards keeping your mattress new. (See our recommendation.)

  • Spot removers may be harmful to the fabric and/or foam. Use them with caution. It's better to use a little mild soap with cold water. Never soak a mattress.

  • Do not bounce on your mattress or sofa bed.
